Premier League explains dramatic moment in which referee awarded West Ham a penalty in their 2-1 win over Manchester United.

West Ham narrowly beat Man Utd 2-1 thanks to a stoppage-time penalty by Jarrod Bowen. After a clash in the box between Matthijs de Ligt and Danny Ings UFABET 

Referee David Coote initially allowed play to continue. But was told by VAR to review the incident on the pitchside monitor himself. Before awarding West Ham a penalty which would eventually be the winning goal. 

The Premier League explained via the “Premier League Match Centre” on the X platform or Twitter. That “the referee did not award a penalty to West Ham for the incident where De Ligt clashed with Danny Ings.”

“However, VAR thought there was sufficient contact around Ings’ lower leg and advised the referee to check the on-field (monitor). The referee then changed his decision and awarded a penalty.”

As expected, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag lashed out at VAR after the controversial penalty was awarded.

Winter added: “I fully understand why Manchester United were aggrieved. And if this is the new improved VAR, then we’re in a sad and sorry state.

“The referee didn’t miss anything yesterday because there wasn’t a lot to see.” Winter continued. “Situations and incidents like this, they’re not good for the game and they’re not helping. They’re creating more problems than there was in the first place.
