West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui believes the referee was right to award his team a penalty. That ended in a winner against Manchester United.

The controversial incident occurred in the final minute. With the teams drawing 1-1 when Matthijs de Ligt clashed with Danny Ings in the penalty area. With referee David Coote initially allowing play to continue.

However, VAR referee Michael Oliver signalled for Coote to reconsider the decision. Before David Coote converted a penalty which Jarrod Bowen converted in stoppage time. UFABET

“I haven’t seen the footage yet, but the players said it should have been a penalty and the referee confirmed it. So I’m sure the referee did the right thing.” Lopetegui West Ham said of the penalty.

“In the first half they (Manchester United) were better and created chances. But in the second half we changed things and came back better and deserved to win.”

“Last week we had a bad result, but today we beat one of the best teams in the world. We need to use the energy from this game to continue and improve.”

With just seconds of normal time remaining. Danny Ings went down to the ground in the box after slight contact from Matthijs de Ligt. And although referee David Coote did not award the spot kick. He was advised to check the VAR monitor by Stockley Park, who felt it was a spot kick.
